Winter is just around the corner, as well as colder temperatures for most of us. The weather may keep your children from playing outside on some days, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t get their daily exercise!
As we’ve stressed before, a minimum of 60 minutes every day is highly recommended for kids of all ages. Adults should strive for the same goal! Keep in mind that the hour per day can be broken up into chunks throughout the day.
When it’s cold outside (or snowy!) it can be difficult to get physical activity in. It may be tempting to pass the time watching TV or playing video games, but avoid extra screen time. During bad weather, being active helps children stay happy and healthy.
Here are some indoor workout ideas:
Dance to your favorite music- You can’t go wrong with dancing. It gets the blood moving and doesn’t even seem like exercise because it’s so fun! Kids can even make up their own dances.
Fitness the Leader– This game is like Follow the Leader, but with exercises as the activities. They can run, skip, dance, or hop!
Freeze game- Put on some music and have the kids dance. Then turn off the music all of a sudden, and the kids must freeze as they are!
Build a fort- Kids can make their own fort out of boxes, blankets, or sheets.
Scavenger hunt- You can have a scavenger hunt all over the house! Hide hard-boiled eggs, little trinkets, or small individual-sized bags of nuts.
Play charades- Pretend to be animals, buildings, or whatever comes to mind while everyone else has to guess what you are!
Indoor bowling- Kids can make their own bowling sets with water bottles and any kind of smaller ball.
