Now that summertime is here, it’s the perfect opportunity for families to strive to be more active. It’s important for both children and adults to get some form of physical activity every day. It’s recommended that children and adults get one hour of physical activity per day.
Whether this means walking, biking, hiking, swimming, playing ball, stretching, or other exercises, some form of physical activity will greatly benefit the entire family. Mixing up the activities and trying different things is the key to being active and having fun!
Here are some tips on how you can become more active as a family this summer and throughout the entire year:
Set specific activity times and goals. Go through your families schedule for times when you can all be together, and plan activities accordingly. Keep it simple by planning evening walks or Saturday morning bike rides.
Make sure your goals are realistic. At first, get into the habit of doing some form of activity when everyone if free. Then you can all work up from there. Try writing future activities on a family calendar, and let the children check them off as you go.
Have a no technology rule. Make it a family rule that no one can spend more than an hour per day on the computer, playing video games, or watching TV. Get out and enjoy the sunshine instead of using technology!
Celebrate with fun physical activity. When it calls for a family celebration, do something active and fun together. Plan a trip to the zoo, park, or lake or go for a hike.
Use what you have. You don’t need fancy equipment or even a gym to be an active family. You can dance, jump rope, do some yoga, or take the dog for a walk. See what free family programs and classes your local YMCA offers.
