Fit Club

This after-school and summer program was designed specifically to provide children ages  4-18 a safe place exercise.  The program develops skills in sports and teaches sportsmanship in addition to gaining self esteem and a positive self image.  Fit ClubTM runs throughout the year and integrates physical activity, nutrition education, and healthy cooking classes/demonstrations for youth and their siblings who are at risk for childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes.

We collaborate with Newport-Mesa and Santa Ana Unified to recruit students for the program.  An average of 30 children participates in each afternoon session, and we have reached over 1,000 children since the program’s inception in 2009. Fit Club is currently held at the Santa Ana Family YMCA.

Program Results

Our 2010 Fit ClubTM summer pogram had amazing results, as 87% of children decreased their Body Mass Index (BMI), 15.3% of overweight/obese children decreased their BMI category, and improvements in fitness scores were statistically significant across all measures. Most recently in 2014, 93% of participants improved their BMI percentiles and 100% of children improved in fitness including situps, pushups, and pacer run.
